When you attend an ultrasound appointment during pregnancy, it's a straightforward and comfortable process designed to provide important information about your baby's development. Here's what typically happens:
Before the Ultrasound
You'll be asked to lie down on a comfortable examination table. It's a good idea to wear loose-fitting clothes for easy access to your abdomen.
During the Procedure
- Application of Gel: A water-based gel will be applied to your abdomen. This gel helps the ultrasound transducer (a handheld device) glide smoothly over your skin and improves the quality of the images.
- Using the Transducer: The technician will move the transducer over your belly. This device sends sound waves into your body, which bounce off your baby and create images on a monitor.

After the Ultrasound
